Winter Car Rental in Bosnia: Equipment & Tips | KLS Auto
Renting a car in Bosnia and Herzegovina this winter? Learn about winter tyres, snow chains and arranging your KLS Auto pickup at Tuzla Airport.
A winter trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina often means spending the holidays with family, visiting relatives or enjoying a few days in the mountains. If you are flying into Tuzla and continuing by car, a few things are worth sorting out before you arrive: which tyres the car has, whether you need snow chains and how collection works if your flight is delayed.
When choosing a rental car for winter, consider your luggage, route and arrival time. A car for a few days in Tuzla may need to meet different requirements from one for a family trip with skis and large suitcases.
This guide covers the key rules and practical steps for renting a car in Bosnia and Herzegovina during winter, with a particular focus on arrivals at Tuzla Airport.
When is winter equipment compulsory in Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Winter equipment is compulsory for passenger cars from 1 November to 1 April, regardless of the weather. This requirement also applies on sunny days when there is no snow on the road.
The regulations allow the following combinations:
| Tyres fitted to the car | Additional equipment required |
|---|---|
| Winter tyres on all wheels | Snow chains are not an additional requirement for this combination |
| Winter tyres on the driven wheels | Snow chains or other traction devices ready to fit to at least two driven wheels |
| Summer tyres on all wheels, with a tread depth of at least 4 mm | Snow chains or other traction devices ready to fit to at least two driven wheels |
These options are set out in the Regulations on Traffic in Winter Conditions.
Although the regulations allow the combination of summer tyres and additional equipment described above, at KLS Auto we neither recommend nor use summer tyres in winter. During the winter season, our vehicles have winter tyres fitted to all wheels.
If you are planning a trip to the mountains, let us know when booking so we can also discuss any additional equipment needed for your route.
Do you need snow chains if the car has winter tyres?
Having winter tyres on all four wheels does not mean you will never need snow chains. Follow road signs, temporary restrictions and instructions from the authorities along your route.
Tell us your destination when booking. Knowing that you are heading to mountain accommodation with an uphill approach is more useful than simply knowing that you need a car for seven days.
If your route requires chains, arrange suitable equipment for your specific vehicle in advance. When collecting the car, check where the equipment is stored and familiarise yourself with how to fit it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
If you are staying in the mountains, ask your host about the final stretch of the access road and whether it is cleared regularly. A clear main road does not tell you enough about the local road leading to your holiday home or apartment.
Winter car rental at Tuzla Airport: How to prepare for pickup
After a flight, especially when travelling with children, knowing exactly where to collect your car and who to contact makes a real difference.
At KLS Auto, we arrange collection at the terminal or at a meeting point confirmed in advance. When you provide your flight number, we monitor delays and coordinate collection with your flight's arrival. You can find more information on our Tuzla Airport car rental page.
When sending an enquiry, please include:
- Your collection and return dates and approximate times.
- Your flight number.
- The number of passengers and how much luggage you will have.
- Whether you are planning a trip to the mountains.
- Whether you need a child seat or any other additional equipment.
If your flight is diverted to another airport, let us know your new arrival location and time. Collection at a different location needs to be arranged separately.
Which car should you choose for a winter trip?
Start with your route and the space you need.
A smaller car can be a practical choice for getting around town and visiting family. If you are travelling with more passengers, large suitcases, a pushchair or winter sports equipment, cabin space and sufficient boot capacity become more important.
A larger car does not, on its own, guarantee safer winter driving. Do not assume that every SUV has four-wheel drive either. Your choice should take account of the specific vehicle, its tyres and the conditions along your route.
Choose a transmission you feel comfortable using, too. Driving on an unfamiliar road, in the dark and in snow, is not the best time to get used to a completely different way of driving.

Book a carWhat should you check before setting off?
Take a few minutes to get familiar with the car. Find the controls for demisting the windscreen, heating the rear window and switching on the lights.
Before you set off:
- Adjust your seat and mirrors.
- Check the windscreen wipers and washer.
- Familiarise yourself with the winter equipment provided.
- Check whether you have an ice scraper and snow brush.
- Enter your destination into the navigation system while parked.
During your stay, clear the windows, mirrors and lights, and remove snow from the roof before driving. Clearing only a small patch of the windscreen does not provide enough visibility.
Fog, ice and driving to the mountains
Before a longer drive, check the latest road conditions in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Check again before your return journey, especially if rain or snow is forecast.
In fog, do not assume that leaving the light switch on “AUTO” is enough. The automatic system may leave only the daytime running lights on. Switch on your dipped headlights manually and check that the rear position lights are also on. BIHAMK also highlights this issue in its advice on driving in fog.
If ice may be present, slow down, leave more space between vehicles and avoid sudden braking, acceleration or steering. Pay particular attention to bridges and shaded stretches of road.
Use navigation as a guide, but assess the conditions before turning onto an unfamiliar local road. Saving a few minutes means little if the suggested route takes you up an uncleared hill.
What should be clear about the price of your winter rental?
Before confirming your booking, you should know the total price, what equipment the vehicle has and the cost of any optional extras you have selected. For mountain routes, make sure you clarify the availability of suitable snow chains.
At KLS Auto, standard rentals require no security deposit or credit card hold and include unlimited mileage. This makes budgeting easier when you are visiting family in several places during your stay. Details are available in the KLS rental terms and frequently asked questions.
Renting without a security deposit does not remove your responsibility for any damage. Before travelling, read what your agreed cover includes and how much the excess is. You can find an explanation in our guide to car rental insurance in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
What if the car cannot continue the journey?
If the car develops a fault or displays a warning that makes it unsafe to continue driving, stop somewhere safe and contact KLS Auto. Send your location and a brief description of the problem, and only take a photo of the dashboard once you have stopped safely.
The contact number is +387 61 25 25 95. Agree the next steps with us before arranging repairs, following our guidance on support during your rental.
Allow extra time for your return to the airport
On your return journey, allow time to clear the car of snow and ice, drive more slowly if needed, refuel according to your rental agreement and hand the car back.
Plan your car return time so you have enough time afterwards for airport procedures. The evening before, confirm the meeting point and check the forecast and road conditions along your route.
If you are planning to rent a car in Tuzla this winter, send us your dates, flight number and travel plans. You can then clarify your choice of vehicle, equipment and collection arrangements before arriving, leaving you free to focus on what brings you here.
